When considering Scripture

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim. 3:16-17 ESV)

Scripture – God’s Word

  • It is Jesus: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  • It is the sword of the Spirit: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Eph. 6:17 ESV)

  • It is living and active: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” (Heb. 4:12-14 ESV)

  • It is needed to live: “But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

  • It gives encouragement and hope: “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Rom. 15:4 ESV)

  • It gives faith to the hearer: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Rom. 10:17 ESV)

  • It accomplishes God’s purpose:  “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isa. 55:11 ESV)

  • It gives light to your pathway: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” ( Psalm 119:105 ESV)

  • It lasts forever: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Matt. 24:35 ESV)

Therefore

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.” (Psalm 19:7-11 ESV)

“My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Prov. 4:29-23 ESV)

“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” (Heb. 2:1 ESV)

Quotes:

“Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the book widens and deepens with our years.” - Charles Spurgeon

“The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can’t really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.” - Elisabeth Elliot
