Serve Your Way to Greatness

“And whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:44-45 ESV)

The hidden path

A young man once asked a successful leader what it took to become great. He expected to hear about ambition, strategy, or hard work. Instead, the answer surprised him: “Find ways to serve people that others overlook.”

So he began doing small things—helping without being asked, encouraging others, giving his time where it was needed. At first, no one noticed. But over time, something changed. People trusted him. They respected him. Opportunities opened—not because he chased them, but because his servant’s heart made room for them.

Jesus taught that greatness doesn’t come from being first in line, but from putting yourself last for the sake of others.

“The greatest among you shall be your servant.” (Matt. 23:11 ESV)

In God’s kingdom, greatness is measured differently

It’s not about status, recognition, or being in charge. It’s about humility, love, and a willingness to serve.

“And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, ‘If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.’” (Mark 9:35 ESV)

When we serve others, we reflect the heart of Christ. And in doing so, we experience a deeper kind of joy.

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35 ESV)

As Booker T. Washington said, “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.”

Therefore

Choose to serve today. Look for simple ways to help, encourage, and lift others up. Don’t chase greatness—serve your way into it. As you do, you’ll not only bless others, but you’ll discover the joy and purpose God designed for you.

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (Gal. 5:13 NIV)

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” (Heb. 6:10 NIV)
