Ask, Seek, Knock—and Believe
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matt. 7:7 NASB)
The open door
A child stood outside a closed door, wanting something from his father. Instead of walking away, he knocked—once, then again. When the door opened, his father smiled and welcomed him in. The child didn’t hesitate or wonder if he was allowed—he simply trusted that his father would respond.
That’s the picture Jesus gives us about prayer
Prayer isn’t a last resort—it’s an open invitation. We are told to ask, to seek, and to knock. Not passively, but persistently. Not doubtfully, but expectantly.
Our prayers are not empty words. They are precious to God.
“Then another angel with a gold incense burner came and stood at the altar. And a great amount of incense was given to him to mix with the prayers of God’s people as an offering on the gold altar before the throne.” (Rev. 8:3 NLT)
God hears. God values. And God answers
“You who answer prayer, to you all people will come.” (Psalm 65:2 NIV)
Jesus made it clear that we are to pray in His name—with confidence in who He is and what He has done.
“Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” (John 16:24 NIV)
And when we pray, we are not alone
Even when we don’t know what to say, the Holy Spirit helps us.
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.” (Rom. 8:26 NLT)
Prayer is not about perfect words—it’s about a trusting heart that believes God will respond.
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24)
Oswald Chambers said, “We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” That’s the difference between doubt and faith—where we place our focus.
Therefore
Keep praying. Ask boldly, seek diligently, and knock persistently. Trust that God hears you, values your prayers, and will answer according to His will and timing.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (Eph. 6:18 NIV)
“Pray also for me… that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” (Eph. 6:19 NIV)
