When Trouble Comes Your Way

“…God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1 ESV)

Trouble is something every person will face. No matter how carefully we plan, how faithfully we live, or how hard we try to avoid difficulties, trouble eventually finds its way into our lives. We live in a fallen world where pain, disappointment, sickness, loss, and hardship are realities of life.

Job understood this truth. In a very short period of time, he lost his possessions, his children, and his health. Yet through it all, he refused to blame God. Instead, he continued to trust Him.

“Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble.” (Job 14:1 ESV)

“But man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward.” (Job 5:7 ESV)

Even in the midst of overwhelming suffering, Job declared:

“Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him.” (Job 13:15 NIV)

What a powerful testimony of faith. Job knew that while he could not always understand his circumstances, he could trust the character of God.

The good news is that God does not abandon us when trouble comes. He becomes our refuge, our strength, and our shelter in the storm. He invites us to run to Him rather than away from Him.

The Lord Is Our Stronghold

“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:9-10 ESV)

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly assures His people that He is near during their darkest moments. He sees our struggles, hears our prayers, and provides strength when our own strength fails.

Jesus also spoke directly to troubled hearts:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” (John 14:1 ESV)

He knew His followers would face difficulties, yet He wanted them to live with confidence, knowing He had already secured the ultimate victory.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 ESV)

Trouble may be unavoidable, but despair is not. Christ has overcome the world, and because we belong to Him, we can face life’s challenges with hope.

Therefore…

When trouble comes, don’t focus on the size of the problem. Focus on the greatness of God. Turn to His Word, seek His presence, and trust His promises. The same God who helped Job, David, and countless others is available to help you today.

“Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight.” (Psalm 119:143 ESV)

Today’s Promise to Remember

“This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:6 ESV)

Prayer

Father, thank You for being my refuge and strength in times of trouble. Help me to trust You when circumstances are difficult and when answers are not clear. Remind me that You are always near and that nothing I face is greater than Your power. Give me peace in the midst of life’s storms and help me keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. In His name, Amen.

“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.” (Nahum 1:7 ESV)
