Honor God with your generosity to the poor

“Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” (Prov. 14:31 ESV) 

Demonstrate God’s love by opening  your heart to a brother in need

“But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?” (1 John 3:17 ESV)

It will be measured back to you

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38 ESV)

Therefore…

There is more blessing in giving than there is in receiving

Give cheerfully with the right attitude

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matt. 6:1-4 ESV)

• The old covenant is for Israelites only while the new covenant is for all men

Old: “What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?”

 New: “In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20 NIV)

“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. (Eph. 5:1 NLT)

Imitate: to follow as a pattern, model, or example. To copy, duplicate, echo or mirror. Greek: γίνεσθε (ginesthe) According to the manner in which, in the degree that, just as. 

As children naturally copy their parent’s pattern of behavior and actions, as God’s children, we are to imitate God in everything we do. Jesus personally demonstrated this as well as did the Apostle Paul. 

Jesus’s Christ’s example

 “Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.’” (John 5:19 NIV)

Apostle Paul’s example

“And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” (1 Cor. 11:1 NLT)

Therefore…

“Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” (Eph. 5:2 NLT)

“…being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (2 Cor 3:3 NASB)

• The old covenant had an earthly tabernacle while the new covenant has a heavenly tabernacle

Old: “There were two rooms in that Tabernacle. In the first room were a lampstand, a table, and sacred loaves of bread on the table. This room was called the Holy Place.” (Heb. 9:2 NLT)

New: “There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands.” (Heb. 8:2 NLT)

• The old covenant was fulfilled while the new covenant is now in force 

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (Mat. 5:17-18 NASB)

“But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. (Heb. 8:6 NIV)

“Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect.”

“We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away.” (2 Cor. 3:13)  

• The old covenant had many high priests while the new covenant has only one high priest, Jesus Christ

“The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.” (Heb. 7:23-28)

• The old covenant brings a curse while the new covenant redeems from the curse 

“For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” (Gal. 3:10-13 NIV)

• The old covenant was abolished while the new covenant  is in force 

“He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups.” (Eph. 2:15) 

• The old covenant is a shadow while the new covenant is the reality 

“The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.” (Heb. 10:1 NIV)

“For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” (Heb. 10:14 NIV)

• The old covenant enslaves while the new covenant sets you free

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32 NIV)

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36 NIV)

“So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.”

• The old covenant leaves man imperfect while the new covenant leaves man perfect

“For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.”  (Heb. 7:19 KJV)

• The old covenant exposes sin while the new covenant covers sin

“Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised...” (Gal 3:19 NLT)

“Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are declared righteous without working for it: “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.” (Rom. 4:1-8 NLT)

• The old covenant came by Moses while the new covenant came by Jesus Christ

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17 NIV)

• The old covenant ends in death while the new covenant gives life

“He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.” (2 Cor 3:6 NLT) 

• The old covenant was ended by Jesus Christ 

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” (Rom. 10:4 NASV)

• The new covenant was established by Jesus Christ

 “But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.” (Heb. 8:6 NLT)
