“Rejoice always,” (1 Thess. 5:16)

Rejoice: To experience joy and gladness in a high degree; to be exhilarated with lively and pleasurable sensations; to exult.

Rejoice always!

We are exhorted in the Bible to rejoice always and we should and must! As God’s  redeemed children and followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we do have a lot to rejoice about! And, no matter our circumstances, we can always choose to rejoice and praise the Lord. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). If we are always filled with the Spirit, and the Spirit causes us to rejoice, then it follows that we will rejoice always.

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” (Phil. 4:4 ESV)

 Reasons to rejoice always

• Rejoice always because you trust in His holy Name

“For our heart rejoices in Him, Because we trust in His holy name.” (Psalm 33:21)

Rejoice always because you love Him

“You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.” (1 Peter 1:8 NLT)

• Rejoice always because God has clothed you with the garments of salvation and righteousness

“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” (Isa. 61:10 ESV)

• Rejoice always in God’s creation

“Be glad; rejoice forever in my creation!” (Isa. 65:18 NLT)

• Rejoice always because your name is written in heaven

“Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20) 

• Rejoice always in your undertakings and blessings

“There also you and your households shall eat before the Lord your God, and rejoice in all your undertakings in which the Lord your God has blessed you.” (Deut. 12:7 )

• Rejoice always in times of suffering 

“More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,” (Rom. 5:3 ESV)

"I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2 ESV)

Thwart: to hinder or stop something from happening; from accomplishing a purpose; to block, frustrate, defeat. 

No one can thwart God’s amazing purposes for us

“O Lord, my God, you have accomplished many things; you have done amazing things and carried out your purposes for us. No one can thwart you! I want to declare them and talk about them, but they are too numerous to recount!” (Psalm 49:5 NET)

Therefore…

“For the LORD of the Heavenly Armies has planned, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?" (Isa.14:27 ISV)

“For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.” (1 Cor. 1:19 NET)

 What the future holds 

During changes in political leadership many on both sides worry how it will affect them and their future. But, no matter who ends up in power, one thing remains true, God is still the same (Heb. 13:8), He doesn’t  change (Mal. 3:6).  And, His many promises in the Bible are still there and still work for those who apply them and mix faith with them (2 Cor. 1:20). I love what someone said, “I stopped worrying about what my future holds when I put my faith in the One who holds the future!” 

God plans to give you a future and a hope 

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer. 29:11 ESV)

 Great is God’s faithfulness

“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lam. 3:21-23 ESV)

 Therefore…

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (Rom. 12:12 ESV)

“Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” (Prov. 23:18 ESV)

Of first importance 

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,” (1 Cor. 15:3  ESV)

The righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ 

“I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.” (Phil. 1:9-11 NLT)

Justice, mercy and faithfulness 

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.” (Matt. 23:23 ESV)

The sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness

“If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.” (1 Tim. 6:3-5 ESV)

Regift: a gift received from someone, and then given as a gift to someone else.

Regifting to others

Everybody, at one time or another, receives a gift they don’t know what to do with. Maybe it was a toaster and you already have one. Or maybe it’s an article of clothing that doesn’t fit or it’s the wrong color or style for you. The item then goes onto a shelf in the closet for a year and wrapped up and given to someone else (hopefully, not to the same person who gave it to you). I heard a story about a family who have passed the same fruitcake back and fourth to each other for over 50 years, all in good humor, of course. I’m sure there are lots of great regifting stories that could be shared, I’ve heard a few. And, there could probably be a discussion about whether it is a good thing to regift or not. But, according to the Bible, followers of Christ are supposed to regift what they have received from God. 

What to freely regift …

•  Regift the love you have received -  “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 15:34-35 ESV)

•  Regift the forgiveness you have received – “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Eph. 4:32 ESV)

•  Regift the faith you have received - “And I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.” (Phi. 1:6 ESV)

•  Regift the grace you have received – “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” (2 Cor. 9:8 ESV)

• Regift the hope you have received - “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Rom. 15:13 ESV)

• Regift the strength you have received -“We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” (Rom. 15:1 ESV)

• Regift the comfort you have received - “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (1 Cor. 1:3-4 ESV)

•  Regift the joy you have received – “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11 ESV)

• Regift the blessings you have received -  “Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” (Psalm 146:5 ESV)

 Therefore…

“For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others,” (2 Cor. 9:12 ESV)

During the months of November and December, the Hallmark movie channel plays one Christmas movie after another. Like other Hallmark movies they are predictable: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back, and ends with a kiss as the credits roll by — only these holiday movies are loaded with brightly decorated cities with colorful Christmas trees, garland, mistletoe, holly and jingle bells. My wife, Susan, loves them, so I have sat through many with her. I have noticed that most of them totally miss the true meaning of Christmas about the joyful good news first proclaimed to a few shepherds tending their sheep, that a Savior has been born, who is Christ the Lord. Now, for the record, I’m not against celebrating Christmas with all the holiday trappings, just as long as we remember the reason for the season. I do love the Christmas carols and I love that people generally seem more happy and charitable at Christmas time. A beautiful song written by Ray Hildebrand, and made popular by singer, Evie Tornquist Karlsson, says it very well:

“Come on ring those bells, light the Christmas tree, Jesus is the king, born for you and me. Come on ring those bells, everybody say, ‘Jesus we remember this, your birthday!’”

A reminder of the true meaning of Christmas 

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” (Matt. 1:23)
