God has given you the ministry of reconciliation!
IMG_3443.jpeg

“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Cor. 5:18)

There are divisions all around us these days

It’s very obvious that divisions exist in things like politics, race and religion. Without a doubt, our country was divided in half during the recent presidential election, and truth is, no matter who had won, the other half would have been unhappy about it.

A divided anything is weaker!

The way to weaken anything is to divide it. In fact, an often used battle strategy is called, “divide and conquer.”

Patrick Henry said in his famous last speech of 1799, “Let us trust God, and our better judgment to set us right hereafter. United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs."

Jesus said it this way

“If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.” (Mark 3:24-25)

God wants us to bring the message of reconciliation to the world!

“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.” (2 Cor. 5:18-19)

And here’s how!

“Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Col. 3:12-15)

“The number one problem in our world is alienation, rich versus poor, black versus white, labor versus management, conservative versus liberal, East versus West . . . But Christ came to bring about reconciliation and peace.” – Billy Graham

All things are possible when done God's way!
IMG_3442.jpeg

"Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.'” (Mark 10:27)

"Stay on the job until you succeed!"

In his book, Think and Grow Rich, 1960, Napoleon Hill tells the story of how Automobile genius Henry Ford once came up with a revolutionary plan for a new kind of engine which we know today as the V-8. Ford was eager to get his great new idea into production. He had some men draw up the plans, and presented them to the engineers. As the engineers studied the drawings, one by one they came to the same conclusion. Their visionary boss just didn't know much about the fundamental principles of engineering. He'd have to be told gently--his dream was impossible. Ford said, "Produce it anyway." They replied, "But it's impossible." "Go ahead," Ford commanded, "and stay on the job until you succeed, no matter how much time is required." For six months, they struggled with drawing after drawing, design after design. Nothing. Another six months. Nothing. At the end of the year Ford checked with his engineers and they once again told him that what he wanted was impossible. Ford told them to keep going. They did. And they discovered how to build a V-8 engine.”

Has God given you a dream?

Throw off everything that hinders you, fix your eyes on Jesus, and proceed on the path God has created you for and has marked out for you!

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Heb. 12:1-3)

Do it God’s way!

There’s power and provision in agreement!
IMG_3437.jpeg

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.” (Matt. 18:19)

Over the years, Susan and I have claimed this agreement promise in many situations.

A few months ago we were considering a large purchase and had the amount we wanted to pay for it set aside in the bank. Then we found the item, but it was a couple of thousand dollars higher than what we had agreed together to pay for it. So, we prayed together once again and said, “God, we have agreed on the amount we want to pay for this item, and we have that money set aside. If this is the correct purchase for us, let us know by providing the extra money in unexpected ways. In Jesus Name, Amen.”

Then we waited

If this was the item for us, the money would come. If it wasn't for us, the money wouldn't come, and we'd keep looking for it elsewhere to become available at our agreed-on price.

The answer came in two parts

First, we got a phone call from our insurance company saying they were returning to us $1,000 that we'd paid earlier to them as a deductible on a claim for damage which had occurred during a power surge. They said the power company had unexpectedly decided to take care of the deductible amount. So, they were returning it to us!

Second, we called to double check the price of the item we wanted and they told us they decided to reduce the price by $1,000!

So, we had our answer! We made the purchase with complete confidence.

“Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus.” (Rom. 15:5)

Do everything in love!
IMG_3436.jpeg

“Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Cor. 16:14 ESV)

Ann Kiemel

I became a Christian in 1970 during the “Jesus movement”. God touched a lot of young people everywhere at that time. Huge Jesus events sprang up everywhere and young people would attend them by the thousands. My wife, Susan, and I were among them. One of the popular speakers at those events was a young youth leader by he name of Ann Kiemel. She moved millions with her simple faith and desire to share Jesus. Her books, including I’m Out to Change My World, I’m Running to Win and I Gave God Time, sold more than 20 million copies. She inspired crowds at conventions, retreats, churches and coliseums.

The following story by Ann Kiemel, and published by Heritage Builders Association, is excerpted from her book, “I’m Out To Change My World”.  In it, Ann tells how she and her youth group worked together in an experiment to see what love could do for a troubled teenager named John. The following is what she said happened.

John

“One kid, his name was John, walked around with his head down all the time. He never looked you in the eye, and if you ever got close to him, he shuddered. One day John wasn’t there, and I said to the kids, “Let’s try an experiment. Let’s really love John, I mean, really love him, as we’ve never loved anyone before. Let’s just see what love can do for John.” He was the most inhibited, insecure kid. I had ever seen in my life. From that moment on we asked Jesus to help us love John. Every time he came into a room, everyone wanted to sit by John. We sent him letters. We wrote notes during the week. We stopped by to buy him a coke.

After six months of loving john the kids started to get tired. “Gee, Ann, you don’t know what it’s like to love John. You call him at home to see how his week is going and he says ‘m-m-m, OK.’ John, you say, I really have been thinking of you and I love you and he just grunts.” But I’ll never forget the morning we were all gathered together and suddenly John smiled. We had never seen John smile. He really smiled. And two weeks later when he laughed out loud it nearly blew our minds. No one wanted John to notice but they were all trying to signal me— “Had I noticed? John laughed, he really laughed.”

Three weeks later his mother, who was a non-Christian— the whole family was non-Christian— called me and said, “Ann, last weekend we were in the mountains camping. John is 16 and I haven’t seen him cry since he was five. But he started to cry and bawl and sob. And after four hours I was almost frantic and I asked him why he was crying like this. All he could say over and over was ‘I’m such a failure, mom, I’m such a flop.” and finally I said, ‘It’s that church you’re going to, they’re not treating you right.’ and he said as he shook his head, ‘No, no. It’s my only hope, mom. They love me over there.’” And she said, “It seemed like the minute he said that, the minute he came out and shared that with me, he began to dry his tears, and he straightened his back and held his head up and it’s strange, he’s never been the same since. And in the group he began to laugh a lot, he began to share in conversational prayer when we prayed. He began to bring a friend on Sunday, and two friends the next Sunday and he became the best softball player we ever had. For the first time in his life he had the courage to play ball.

Love changed john’s life, just love. you can do one of two things in your world. You can build a wall or you can build a bridge to every person you meet. I’m out to build bridges, are you? Come and build bridges with me. Sir, can I take your hand? Or yours ma’am? Can I pick you up little boy and hold you in my lap and kiss your cold face even if it’s dirty? Can I love you to Him? Can I love you so much through thick and thin until you learn that Jesus really cares for you? Can I love you until you feel hope for your world and your tomorrows? That’s my hope. that’s my story and it can be yours.”

This is Mike again. Wasn’t that a great story that Ann Kiemel told? Why was love so powerful in her story? Hasn’t the word “love” been overly used by many without this kind of results? Love has been used as the theme for countless books, songs, and movies? There seems to be a lot of confusion about what love actually is. The Beatles had a famous song called, “All you need is love”. But looking at their use of drugs and how they lived, you can see they didn’t understand the true meaning of love. And then there was Tina Tuner, who sang, “What’s love got to do with it? What’s love, but a second-hand emotion?” Obviously she didn’t have the answer, either. So, where do you find the correct answer that explains clearly about what love actually is? The answer is the Bible! The Bible says that God Himself is love (1 John 4:8). That’s right, if you want to know what love is, check out what the Bible says about God. John 3:16 says about Him: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Then there’s First Corinthians 13, commonly known as the love chapter, which defines what love is in verses 4-8: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” And, that’s the kind of love that changes lives! That is why John’s life was touched and changed dramatically in Ann Kiemel’s story. Ann and the kids in her group actively demonstrated God’s kind of love to John! And it worked wonders. And it’s how we all should love!

Therefore:

“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Col. 3:14 ESV)

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 ESV)

Apathy
IMG_3433.jpeg

“Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.” (Rev. 3:2 ESV)

ApathyLack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference. Lack of emotion or feeling; impassiveness. Want of feeling; absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement; insensibility; indifference.

Warned many times

One account of the Titanic says that a ship close by warned them six times that they were headed for an iceberg and would sink. On the sixth time the Captain of the Titanic signaled back, “Shut up I’m busy.” God continually reveals His truths to us in many ways—through His creation (Psalms 19:1-6), through His messengers (Heb 1:14) and through life’s circumstances (Rom. 8:28), but we are often apathetic (we don’t care), we’re distracted (our eyes are on electronic devices), or we’re just too busy with the cares of the world to notice that He’s talking to us in a small voice.

Dull of hearing

“About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,” (Heb. 5:11-12 ESV)

Watch out!

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Rev. 3:15-16 ESV)

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Tim. 4:3-4 ESV)

“The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway.” (Prov. 15:19 ESV)

Therefore

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6:19-12 ESV)

“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” (Rom. 12:9-13 ESV)

Give generously and cheerfully
IMG_3430.jpeg

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Cor. 9:7 ESV)

A truth that has never failed

I agree completely with Charles Spurgeon, who said, “In all of my years of service to my Lord, I have discovered a truth that has never failed and has never been compromised. That truth is that it is beyond the realm of possibilities that one has the ability to out give God. Even if I give the whole of my worth to Him, He will find a way to give back to me much more than I gave.” It is so true!

Give freely to bless and grow

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” (Prov. 11:24-25 ESV)

“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” (2 Cor. 9:6 ESV)

Be generous to the poor

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” (Prov. 19:17 ESV)

“Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.” (Prov. 22:9 ESV)

“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.” (Deut. 15:7-8 ESV)

Therefore

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38 ESV)

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35 ESV)

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” (1 Tim. 6:17-19 ESV)

Trust
IMG_3429.jpeg

“For the word of the LORD holds true, and we can trust everything he does.” (Psalm 33:4 NLT)

Trustassured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something; confidence, credence, faith, stock.

Where should you place your trust?

“Where should you place your trust?” That is an age-old question and many voices are telling you to trust them. An old joke used often in television situation comedies shows the person, usually in an awkward or dangerous situation saying, “Trust me, I know what I’m doing.” But, it never turns out well. And, all joking put aside, blindly placing trust in others, or anything else, is always a bad idea. The Bible says, “There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth” (Prov. 30:12 ESV)

Trusting in self - I have a friend who told me in a conversation many years ago that he lived by Shakespeare’s words, “This above all: to thine own self be true.”And how did this work out for him? His marriage failed and he ended up alone and unhappy. The problem in self trust is that we are flawed with a sin nature and prone to mistakes. The Bible puts it this way: “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death” (Prov. 16:25 NIV). And, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9 KJV).

Trusting in others - For exactly the same reason that you can’t trust in yourself, as stated above, others are imperfect with a sin nature and will fail you. The Bible says, “Put no trust in a neighbor; have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms; for the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.” (Micah 7:5-6 ESV)

Trusting in government - Former president, Ronald Reagan, said your trust must not be in government because they don’t want to help you, they only want to control you. As a guest on the Johnny Carson show, he said, “The scariest thing would be for someone to show up at your house and say, ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you.’”

Trust in God with all your heart!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Prov. 3:5 ESV)

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” (Palm 37:4-6 ESV)

“And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 8:10 ESV)

Therefore

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” (Psalm 28:7 ESV)

Quote

“If you’re going to entrust your life and your future to someone or something, you better choose someone who has your best interest at heart, knows everything, is perfect, and will never lie to you. That kind of limits your optionsto God.” – Rick Warren

Holding back evil
IMG_3428.jpeg

“And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.” (2 Thess 2:6-7)

Lawlessness is at work all around us

You can’t listen to the news without noticing that evil is at work and getting worse. It is becoming acceptable and becoming the new normal. The Bible said it would happen and it certainly is. It’s called lawlessness and it’s evil.

  • Evil and selfish people: But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Tim. 3:1-5 ESV)

  • Evil people and imposters:  “While evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (2 Tim. 3:13 ESV)

  • Evil demonic teachings: “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,” (1 Tim. 4:1 ESV)

  • Evil scoffers and accusers: “Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” (2 Pet. 3:3 ESV)

God is greater!

Even though evil is active and getting worse, it is being held back by the Holy Spirit (see 2 Thess. 2:6-7 at top). The Holy Spirit is inside of us empowering us to work against the evil forces in the world.

 Jesus overcame the world

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 ESV)

We are over-comers with the Holy Spirit inside us

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4 KJV)

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5 ESV)

Therefore

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor. 15:57 ESV)

Everyday a fresh beginning with God
IMG_3424.png

“He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” (Col. 1:18)

God, first place in everything

The above passage tells us that God is head of the church (which is His body), is Himself “the beginning”, is “the firstborn from the dead” and “will come to have first place in everything”. This verse is about firsts. Notice that it ends with the statement that God Himself is first place in everything.

Jesus is first

“‘The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. ‘From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.’” (Prov. 8:22-23)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1-2)

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Col. 1:15-17)

Jesus talked about firsts

Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things shall be added to you” (Matt. 6:33). This verse is both a command and a promise. The command: Seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness firstThe promise: All these things shall be added to you.

For a list of what God provides when you obey the command, read the book of Matthew, chapter six. In it, Jesus commands you not to be anxious about the necessities of life. Just as God cares for and feeds the birds of the air, you are more valuable to Him and He will take care of you, too.

Therefore

“But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.” (2 Thess. 2:13)

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24 KJV)
