Forgive and then be forgiven

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matt. 6:14-15)

Two promises

This passage of scripture has two promises, one is positive and one is negative. The one you get depends totally on you. It has to do with forgiving others who have sinned against you. If you do forgive them your Heavenly Father will forgive you (positive), and if you do not forgive them, your Heavenly Father won’t forgive you (negative). It’s a very simple concept. Forgiveness is a choice you choose to make and non-forgiveness is a choice you choose to make. Choose wisely!

Therefore

“And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” (Mark 11:25 ESV)

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Eph. 4:32 ESV)

“Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” (Luke 17:3-4 ESV)

“To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.” – C.S. Lewis

God is our refuge and strength

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

This verse tells us three important promises about God

1) He is our refuge (a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble).

2) He is our strength (the quality or state of being strong, in particular).

3) He is our ever-present help in the time of trouble (assist, aid, lend a helping hand to, give assistance to, come to the aid of).

Therefore

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isa. 41:10 ESV)

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13 ESV)

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Rom. 8:28 ESV)

God supplies more than enough!

“For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance.” (Matt. 13:12)

We serve a God who supplies more than enough! In fact, one verse says it is, “A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over!” (Luke 6:38)

God gives you the power to get wealth!

“And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth…” (Deut. 8:18)

Notice that this verse says it is God who gives you “power to get wealth.” He doesn’t simply drop it to you out of the sky. You have a part in getting it.

You must “remember the Lord your God”

Include God and put Him first in every part of the process. (Matt 6:33). Ask Him for wisdom and knowledge in order to know what you should do to get it (Matt 7:7). He will give you productive ideas, talents, personal skills, gifts, and opportunities, which will help you.

You must look for them, recognize them, develop them, and put them to work!

Keep in mind that, even though God does promise to supply all your needs (Phil. 4:19), it is usually disguised as work!

Therefore

Work hard with a good attitude as though you are working for the Lord! After all, everything you need will come from Him!

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” (Col. 3:23-24)

Your labor in the Lord is not in vain!

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Cor. 15:58)

Your labor in the Lord is not in vain!

Sometimes it can be tiring “doing the right thing,” especially when so many others around you are not. It’s no longer popular to live according to God’s standards. But, you may be surprised to know that that is not a new problem. Elijah complained to the Lord, “I am the only one who has remained faithful!” (1 Kings 19:10). But, God told him that He was incorrect. He told him that 7,000 others also had remained faithful. That information must have been encouraging for Elijah to hear.

It’s true! God has lots of faithful followers. You are not alone! So, be encouraged and don’t quit!

At the proper time, we will reap a harvest

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Gal. 6:9)

Therefore

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,” (Heb. 12:1 ESV)

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (Rom. 12:12 ESV)

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Phil. 1:6 ESV)

Quotes:

“Nothing paralyzes our lives like the attitude that things can never change. We need to remind ourselves that God can change things. Outlook determines outcome. If we see only the problems, we will be defeated; but if we see the possibilities in the problems, we can have victory.” - Warren Wiersbe

“God knows our situation; He will not judge us as if we had no difficulties to overcome. What matters is the sincerity and perseverance of our will to overcome them.” - C.S. Lewis

“We can do nothing without prayer. All things can be done by importunate prayer. It surmounts or removes all obstacles, overcomes every resisting force and gains its ends in the face of invincible hindrances.” - E.M. Bounds

Give Thanks

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” (1 Chron. 16:34 ESV)

Thanksgiving Day

In America, since1863, we set aside the forth Thursday of November as a national Thanksgiving Day holiday.

President Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation from October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States A Proclamation

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and even soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provoke their aggressions, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict; while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that, while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.

 Quotes:

“We would worry less if we praised more.Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.” - H.A. Ironside

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation." - Brian Tracy

“When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity.” – Elie Wiesel

“Be grateful for what you have and stop complaining -- it bores everybody else, does you no good, and doesn't solve any problems.” - Zig Ziglar

God will establish your plans

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” (Prov. 16:3)

Here is an interesting promise

It begins with a command, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do.”  And then the command is followed by the promise, “and he will establish your plans.”

It’s a great success principle to apply to everything you do

Include God first, and allow Him to help you in every step of your plans. And then allow God to establish them for you.

“But, seek you first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33)

He will direct your path

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.” (Prov. 3:6)

Moving ahead and finding happiness

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” (Matt. 25:21)

Faithfulness always pays off

Within this verse is found the key to moving ahead and finding happiness. It begins with 1) being faithful in a “few” things. After that, you will 2) progress to “many” things. Happiness results from practicing faithfulness, no matter what level you find yourself at. Faithfulness always pays off.

God demonstrates faithfulness

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.” (Deut. 7:9)

God is merciful and gracious

“But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” (Psalm 86:15)

“Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.” (Psalm 36:5)

“God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Cor. 1:9)

God graciously provides for you!

“Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” (Luke 12:24 NIV)

God supplies all your needs through His many promises!

“There are approximately 8,810 promises in the entire Bible. In the Old Testament there are 7,706 and in the New Testament there are 1,104 wonderful promises. Deuteronomy 28 has 133 promises, which is more than any other chapter in the Bible. ‘We’re sitting on the premises when we ought to be standing on the promises!’” -  Vance Havner

 He graciously gives

“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Rom. 8:32)

He supplies all your needs!

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:19)

Therefore

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” (Matt. 6:31-32)

God shields all who take refuge in Him!

“As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 18:30 NIV)

This passage of scripture contains a number of important words to look closely at: perfect, flawless, shield, and refuge.

God’s way is perfect!

Perfect is defined as having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be. Ideal, and without fault.

God’s Word is flawless!

Flawless is defined as without any blemishes or imperfections; perfect. unmarked, and unimpaired.

He is your shield!

Shield is defined as something that defends or protects someone or something.

Take refuge in Him!

Refuge is defined as condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble. It’s shelter, protection, safety, security, and sanctuary.
