About dreams

Dreams are usually associated with happy and positive scenarios, but when they take a disturbing turn, you’re likely finding yourself in the middle of bad dream or a nightmare. A nightmare, or bad dream, is considered a dream that’s tied to negative, stressful emotions which can be caused by many things, such as by what you fed your mind with before going to bed, such as watching a scary movie or a negative television program; or by fearful things that may have happened to you during the day; or by worries or fears on your mind from events present or past, or they can even be caused by something you have eaten, preventing you from sleeping soundly.  

While having a bad or scary dream on occasion isn’t abnormal, as a Christian, you can do something about them. 

• Before you go to sleep set your mind on the Spirit

“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Rom. 8:6)

• Ask the Lord to help you sleep peacefully 

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way.” (2 Thess. 3:16)

• Claim God’s sleep promises

There are many Bible promises about sleeping soundly and peacefully. Memorize them and meditate on them as you drift off to sleep. 

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” (Prov. 3:24)

“I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.” (Psalm 3:5) 

• Deal with any Anxiety according to God’s Word

Anxiety is one of the chief causes of nightmares. Anxiety is defined as amplified fear, or simply put, fear on steroids, and as Christians, we have some great promises to claim regarding dealing with fear. 

First, understand the biblical truth that anxiety is NOT from God! It’s from the devil and you have no obligation to obey it. 

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Tim. 1:7)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (John 14:27)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Pet. 5:7)

Dealing with negative and sinful dreams

Finally, if you are having negative, inappropriate, or sinful dreams, you must deal with them exactly the same way as you do with other bad dreams or nightmares.

• Arm yourself before you sleep. Ask God to give you good sleep before you drift off to sleep. 

• Fill your mind with God’s Word. Look up appropriate Bible passages which address the content of your dreams and commit them to memory. Meditate on them as you drift off to sleep. 

• Avoid entertainment and negative input that feed your sinful dreams. You know what that is for you. 

• And, if you do have a negative or sinful dream. Immediately upon awakening, recognize it for what it is, an attack from the devil that you absolutely reject. Confess it to God and turn from it. Here are three things to do. 

1)    Don’t ignore or dismiss it, recognize it for what it is.  “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” (Prov. 27:13)

2)    Ask God to search you for any hidden sin in your heart and let Him cleans you of anything He reveals. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me. (Psalms 139:23-24)

3)    Confess it and and accept God’s forgiveness. “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)

“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” (Prov. 10:9 ESV)

Integrity – The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. honesty, honor, good character, ethics, righteousness, virtue, decency, fairness. 

Integrity means renouncing wrong ways and walking in God’s truth

“But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God.” (2 Cor. 4:2 ESV)

 The integrity of the upright is their guide

 “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” (Prov. 11:3 ESV)

“By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me. But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. “ (Psalms 41:11-12 ESV)

The righteous walks in integrity and their children are blessed 

“The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him!” (Prov. 20:7 ESV)

In your teaching show integrity 

“Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity.” (Titus 2:7 ESV)

Controlling what you say will keep you out of trouble!

“Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” (Prov. 29:30 ESV)

Today, someone said something on my Facebook feed about the President of the United States, and immediately, people began to react emotionally to it. Soon the conversation turned ugly. I finally hid the entire conversation string because it was nothing but hate speech.

Words matter!

When I was a little boy, if someone would say something mean to me, I would say out loud to them, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” But, the truth is, their words DID hurt me! A lot! And, words DO matter!

Does God care about your words?

Yes he does! The following are verses in the Bible about the importance of words. Read through them, and the next time you are tempted to use your words to comment negatively on social media, think about them.

Let your speech always be gracious

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Col. 4:6 ESV)

By your words you will be justified or condemned

“For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matt. 12:37 ESV)

Put away all obscene talk from your mouth

“But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.” (Col. 3:8 ESV)

Guard your mouth!

“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” (Prov. 13:3 ESV)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV)

The verse at top is a promise about God’s kind of peace

Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.” Notice that he mentions peace twice in the first sentence. That’s because the peace that God gives is more powerful than fear. He says he has given peace to you, and it’s a  different kind of peace than what the world gives.That’s an important distinction to understand. 

The verse at top is also a command not to allow fear

Because of the “different” kind of peace that Christ gives, you have been given God’s power over fear. He commands his people, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” 

God has delivered you from all fears 

“I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4 NIV)

 Be strong and do not fear, God will help you

“Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” (Isa. 35:4 NIV)

“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” (Isa. 41:13 NIV)

Be strong, courageous and do not be afraid

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Josh. 1:9 NIV)

Because God cares for you, cast all your anxiety on Him

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (2 Peter 5:6-7 NIV)

“So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.” (1 Thess. 5:6 ESV)

Awake, put on strength 

“Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in days of old, the generations of long ago.” (Isa. 51:9 ESV)

Awake, for salvation is now nearer than when we first believed 

“Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Rom. 13:11-12 ESV)

Wake up for some have no knowledge of God

“Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.” (1 Cor. 15:34 ESV)

Stay awake at all times

“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36 ESV)

Wake up and strengthen what remains 

“Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.” (Rev. 3:2-3 ESV)

Walk in Him, firmly rooted, and overflowing

“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” (Col. 3:6-7 NASB)

Walk in newness of life 

“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” (Rom. 6:4 ESV)

Walk in the way the Lord has commanded you 

“You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.” (Deut. 5:13 ESV)

 Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord

“So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” (Col. 1:10 ESV)

Walk in love

“And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Eph. 5:2 ESV)

 Don’t walk in darkness

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV)

 Walk in the same way as Jesus 

“Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” (1 John 2:6 ESV)

Walk humbly with your God

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the 

Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8 ESV)

Walk in good works

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10 ESV)

Walk in God’s ways

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here.” (Zech. 3:7 ESV)

Walk in a Manner worthy of your calling 

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.” (Eph. 4:1 ESV)

“But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.” (Rom. 5:15 NLT)

God’s free gift leads to being right with God

“And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. (Rom. 5;16 NLT)

God’s wonderful grace and gift of righteousness 

“For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.” (Rom. 5:17 NLT)

Brings new life and a right relationship with God 

“Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous. (Rom. 5:18-19 NLT)

God’s wonderful grace rules 

“God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. 21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Rom. 5:20-21 NLT)

“…and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Rom. 5:5 NASB)

Filled with all the fullness of God and grounded in love

“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Eph. 3:17-19 ESV)

 The kind of love given to us

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” (1 John 3:1 ESV)

Let us love one another 

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7 ESV)

 “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.” (Rom. 5:1-2 NLT) 

Privilege defined

Privilege comes from the Latin word privilegium, and means a benefit enjoyed by an individual or group beyond what's available to others. Being a member of an exclusive club, organization, or group brings privileges for its members. Family members have privileges that only apply to family members. 

Having privileges is wonderful

In 1968, I was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama, US Army Aviation Center. I was in charge of three music centers at the base. The job came with many privileges; I lived in a nice apartment, wore a  monogrammed jumpsuit, and I had a “go-to-the-front-of-the-line” meal card to use at all the base mess halls. When I was hungry, I just walked into any one of them, then to the front of the line and showed my card. It was great to have all those special privileges.

We have many privileges as members of God’s family 

The Bible passage at top says we have “undeserved privilege” provided to us through faith in Jesus Christ. Here are some of them

We are adopted in God’s family which  brings many wonderful privileges 

• Privilege of being a co-heir with Christ “Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…” (Rom. 8:17) 

• Privilege of having bold access to God “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb. 4:16 NKJV)

• Privilege of having a new home waiting in heaven “But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” (2 Peter 3:13 NASB)

• Privilege of being Blessed “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” (Eph. 1:3 NASB)

• Privilege of using His Name “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:14 NASB)

• Privilege of having all of God’s promises “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ.” (2 Cor. 1:20 NIV)

• Privilege of sharing the good news with others “And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15 ESV)
