When Your Faith Feels Insufficient
“Jesus asked the boy’s father, ‘How long has he been like this?’ ‘From childhood,’ he answered. ‘It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.’ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. ‘Everything is possible for one who believes.’ Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’”

A man once stood before Jesus carrying a burden he could no longer bear. His son had suffered for years, and every failed attempt at help had worn down his confidence. Desperate and exhausted, he pleaded with Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
How often have we felt the same way? We pray, but doubts linger. We believe, yet questions remain. We want to trust God completely, but circumstances seem bigger than our faith.
Jesus gently challenged the father’s words. The issue was not whether Jesus could help; the issue was whether the father would trust Him. The man’s response has become one of the most honest prayers in Scripture: “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
God does not require perfect faith. He asks us to bring the faith we have and place it in Him. Even when our faith feels weak, He is strong. Even when doubts creep in, we can ask Him to strengthen our confidence and trust in His promises.
Faith Is Confidence
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
(Heb. 11:1 NIV)
Faith is not wishful thinking. It is confidence in God’s character and His promises, even when we cannot see the outcome.
We Live By Faith
“For we live by faith, not by sight.”
(2 Cor. 5:7 NIV)
Our circumstances may change daily, but God’s faithfulness never changes. Faith looks beyond what is visible and trusts Him.
It Is Impossible To Please God Without Faith
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
(Heb. 11:6 NIV)
God honors those who continue to seek Him, even when they struggle with questions and doubts.
Faith Is Tested
“Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
(James 1:3 NIV)
Trials are not evidence that faith has failed. Often they are the very means God uses to strengthen it.
Faith Involves Your Heart And Mouth
“For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
(Rom. 10:10 NIV)
Faith grows as we believe God’s Word in our hearts and speak His promises with our mouths.
Therefore
When your faith feels insufficient, remember that God is not looking for flawless faith. He is looking for a willing heart that continues to trust Him. Bring your doubts, fears, and questions to Him. Pray as the father prayed, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” As you do, the Holy Spirit will strengthen your inner being, deepen your confidence, and help your faith grow stronger with each step of obedience.
“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love.”
