Grow and overflow

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” (Col. 2:7 (NLT)

 Overflowing with God’s truth

While working at a vendor booth at a business conference a few years ago a person in the booth next to me gave me a compliment. He said he noticed that words about God and Scripture just seemed to roll off my tongue. He said he was a brand new Christian and hoped he could do that someday. I thanked him and told him that I hadn’t noticed that I was doing that (and I really hadn’t noticed). I told him that as he grew in the knowledge and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, he would simply overflow with it. In other words, what your heart and mind is filled with, you will be naturally talking about. If you abound with it you will run over with it.

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37 ESV)

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Rom. 15:13 ESV)

“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45 ESV)

Therefore

“And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you,” (1 Thess. 3:12 ESV)
