Work Heartily as God’s Servant
“Don’t just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ’s servants doing what God wants you to do.” (Eph. 6:6 The Message)
A man was hired to sweep floors at a large facility. At first, he did just enough to get by—quick passes, corners missed, little attention to detail. One day, the owner quietly watched him work. Instead of correcting him, the owner picked up a broom and began sweeping alongside him—carefully, thoroughly, with excellence. The worker noticed the difference immediately. Later he learned the man beside him was not just a supervisor, but the owner himself.
From that day on, everything changed. He no longer worked just to finish a task—he worked as if the owner was always present.
That is exactly how God calls us to live
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…” (Col. 3:23-24 ESV)
Whether in business, at home, or in ministry, our work is never merely “a job.” It is service to Christ. When we understand this, even the smallest tasks take on eternal value. The unseen, unnoticed, and uncelebrated work matters—because God sees it all.
“And let us not grow weary of doing good… So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Gal. 6:9-10 ESV)
Working heartily also means working faithfully toward others
Serving, helping, encouraging, and doing good whenever the opportunity arises. And we are reminded to especially care for fellow believers, our spiritual family.
Martin Luther once said, “What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God…” Every act of obedience, no matter how ordinary it seems, becomes sacred when it is done by faith for God.
Therefore
Approach every task today—large or small—as an act of service to Christ. Work with excellence, integrity, and a willing heart, knowing that you are ultimately serving Him, not people.
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Col. 3:17 ESV)
“For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:35)
