Humble and Contrite Heart

“I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.” (Isa. 66:2 NLT)

A humble heart doesn’t come naturally

It is formed. Life has a way of bringing us low, stripping away pride and self-reliance. In those moments, we begin to see clearly: we are not in control, and we need God.

Humility means more than just thinking less of ourselves

Humility means seeing ourselves rightly before God. It is being meek, modest, and unpretentious. A contrite heart is one that is tender, repentant, and responsive to His Word. It trembles—not in fear of punishment, but in reverence for who God is.

Scripture makes it clear that humility positions us for God’s grace:

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’” (James 4:6 ESV)

Think about that

God actively resists pride, but He leans in toward humility. He draws near to those who recognize their need for Him. In fact, He promises not only to dwell with the humble, but to restore and revive them:

“I dwell…with the oppressed and humble of spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite.” (Isa. 57:15)

What the world often sees as weakness, God sees as the very place where His strength can work most powerfully.

Saint Augustine wrote, “Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending…” True elevation in God’s kingdom always begins with humility.

Therefore

Choose humility. Lay aside pride and come before God with a soft, teachable heart. Let Him shape your character and revive your spirit. As you walk in humility, you will find His grace, His presence, and His favor resting on your life.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience…” (Col. 3:12 ESV)
