Guard your mind carefully

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…” (Phil. 2:5 ESV)

I believed every word

When I was a young boy, my older brother David told me about a colorful little bird called a snipe. He made it sound amazing—friendly, easy to catch, and the perfect pet. He said all I had to do was stand by the river at night with a flashlight and an open paper bag, and he and his friends would flush the birds out toward me.

That night, they took me out, gave me my instructions, and left me standing there in the dark—waiting… and waiting. Eventually I realized they were gone. The funny part? When I got home, I still believed the story and wanted to go back again! It took some convincing before I finally accepted the truth.

It’s amazing how strongly we can hold onto something—even when it isn’t true—simply because we want it to be.

Changing the way you think

That same tendency shows up in our spiritual lives. We form opinions, habits, and ways of thinking based on the world around us. And once those patterns are set, we often resist change—even when God’s Word clearly shows us a better way.

The Bible reminds us that our thinking shapes who we are:

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Prov. 23:7)

If we’re going to grow in Christ, we must be willing to let Him reshape how we think—not just what we do. That kind of transformation doesn’t happen automatically; it happens intentionally.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” (Rom. 12:2 ESV)

God’s Word renews our minds. It replaces lies with truth, confusion with clarity, and worldly thinking with godly wisdom.

What to do

Take every thought captive
“We… take every thought captive to obey Christ…” (2 Cor. 10:5 ESV)

Set your mind on higher things
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (Col. 3:2 ESV)

Stay in God’s Word
“Study… rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15 KJV)

What you consistently think about will shape what you believe—and ultimately how you live.

Therefore

Guard your mind carefully. Refuse to believe every thought that comes your way. Instead, align your thinking with God’s truth. As you do, your life will begin to reflect His will more clearly, and you will grow stronger in your walk with Him.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely… think about these things.” (Phil. 4:8 ESV)

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Prov. 4:23 ESV)

“The mind can think only one thought at a time. If your mind is occupied by a meaningless thought, you block a meaningful thought from entering it.” — Unknown
