When building on God’s firm foundation
IMG_2611.jpeg

“But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” (2 Tim. 2:19 ESV)

Jesus Christ the firm foundation

“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.” (1 Cor. 3:11-13 ESV)

Jesus Christ the chief cornerstone

“Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” (Matt. 21:42 ESV)

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” (Eph. 2:19-22 ESV)

“Therefore thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’” (Isa. 28:16 ESV)

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” (1 Peter. 2:4-6 ESV)

Hearing Gods Words and doing them builds a firm foundation

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matt. 7:24 ESV)

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” (Luke 6:46-48 ESV)

Therefore

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.” (1 Cor. 16:13)

“Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephe. 6:22)

Quote:

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand

My hope is built on nothing less

than Jesus' blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand,

all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

in every high and stormy gale,

my anchor holds within the veil.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand,

all other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, his covenant, his blood

support me in the whelming flood;

when all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand,

all other ground is sinking sand.

When he shall come with trumpet sound,

O may I then in Him be found,

Dressed in His righteousness alone,

faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand,

all other ground is sinking sand.

When finishing
IMG_2599.jpeg

“‘For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” (Luke 14:28-30 ESV)

Don’t quit, be a good finisher

Someone once said, “If you don’t quit, you win!” I can’t remember who said it but I believe it is true, because most of the time you can win out of pure grit and determination. That has been proven over and over throughout history in many famous battles fought and won in spite of incredible odds against them. One of the shortest, yet greatest speeches ever given by a national leader was by Sir Winston Churchill, who said, “Never give up! Never, never, never, never!”

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Gal. 6:9 ESV)

Jesus is a good example of finishing well

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 18:30 BIV

“I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:4 NIV)

Paul is a good example of finishing well

“But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts. 20:24 ESV)

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 3:14 ESV)

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim. 4:7 ESV)

Therefore

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.” (Phil. 3:12-16 ESV)

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Heb. 12:1 ESV)

“Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.” (Eccles. 7:8 ESV)

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Phil. 1:6 ESV)

When Jesus shed His blood

“And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.” (Rev. 1:5 ESV)

 Jesus’ blood was poured out for the forgiveness of sins

 “So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.” (Heb. 13:12 ESV)

 “Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” (1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV)

 We are justified by His blood

We are reconciled by His blood

“And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”  (Col. 1:20 ESV)

The blood of Christ purifies our conscious from dead works to serve the living God

Jesus is our example

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 ESV)

Use your gift to serve one another

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10 ESV)

Outdo one another in genuine love

Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” (Rom. 12:9-13 ESV)
